Onsite test and assessment facilities include equipment to calculate the physical and environmental performance of materials, finished cable and components.  All tests carried out by Brand-Rex are conducted to IEC and CENELEC standards and are designed to offer customers assurance that our solutions offer the highest performance and quality available.

Electrical Testing

The superior transmission performance offered by Brand-Rex solutions is achieved by using network analysers and software tools to test technical aspects such as crosstalk, attenuation and return loss of cables, components and cabling system performance (channel and link).

Optical Testing

Optical Fibre cables and components undergo testing individually and in a channel configuration.  Rigorous mechanical, environmental, thermal and optical performance tests are all carried out to international standards.  A multi-functional optics platform is used to assess key optical performance parameters for emerging high speed 40-100G and low loss connectivity technologies, such as:

  • Insertion Losses & Return Losses
  • Polarised Modal Dispersion (PMD)
  • Field Testers: Analysis of, and with, field test equipment
Material Properties

Extrusion and moulding are key processes in the manufacture of wire and cable and components respectively.  Rheology is used to measure the flow and deformation of material and is an important property in the development process as it provides:

  • Characteristic data of material flow processes
  • Support for the material selection process.
  • Quality control
  • Failure analysis

The Brand-Rex sustainability programme has also adopted the use of rheology to measure the pressures within material flow to understand how much energy a material uses during extrusion.

Analytical Capability

Analytical equipment is used to establish key characteristics of materials such as the crystallinity of high performance engineering materials, morphology, thermal and ageing properties.  The same technology is used to determine how well cross-linked polymers are bonded.   Brand-Rex employs the following in-house thermal and infrared characterisation techniques:

  • FT-IR (Fourier Transformed – Infra Red Spectroscopy)
  • TGA (Thermo Gravimetrical Analysis)
  • DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry)

Thermal Analysis

Thermal analysis is used to study property changes in materials to understand how products will react when exposed to environmental factors such as temperature and ageing using:

  • Temperature & Humidity cycling chambers
Physical Cable Performance Assessment

Brand-Rex fully test cables to IEC standards, proving compliance and defining performance envelopes and limits.  This capability enables fast development times and affords:

Applied Materials Science

Using thermoanalytical techniques such as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DCS) is essential to R&D activities to further develop innovative approaches to using new and improved materials.

Applications Research and Analysis

‘Hero’ testing of cables and connectivity is undertaken to determine the limits of the technologies and define safe operating configurations and architectures.
